What you'll learn:
- Explain how GLP-1 receptor agonists work and their benefits beyond glycemic control (e.g., weight loss, cardiovascular and renal protection).
- Compare GLP-1s to other diabetes medications in terms of effectiveness, side effects, and long-term outcomes.
- Determine which type 2 diabetes patients in primary care benefit most from GLP-1 receptor agonists based on comorbidities (e.g., obesity, cardiovascular disease, kidney disease).
- Discuss who should not receive GLP-1s due to contraindications or tolerability issues.
- Discuss primary care’s role in using GLP-1s for obesity management, even in non-diabetic patients.
About the presenter

Justin B. Moore, MD, FACP, is an Education Associate Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Kansas School of Medicine–Wichita, where he also serves as the Director of Nutrition and Metabolism Education. He earned a BS in Nutritional Sciences from Kansas State University and completed his MD at the University of Kansas School of Medicine–Wichita, followed by an Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism fellowship at the University of North Carolina–Chapel Hill. In addition to his academic role, Dr. Moore is the Medical Director for the Kansas Business Group on Health and an endocrinology consultant with RubiconMD. Passionate about the intersection of clinical care and public health, he believes chronic disease management should be a top priority in patient care and that true health, while challenging to define and measure, is more attainable than most people think—and ultimately cost-saving. Dr. Moore remains deeply involved in educating students, residents, and fellows on diverse topics related to nutrition and metabolism, including diabetes, liver disease, and malabsorptive syndromes.
